Easy Plug-In Pendant Lamp

02.04.21 | DIY

Have you ever had an awkward dark little corner in your house with no option to install a hardwired light fixture? Yup, we’ve all been there or at least know someone who has. This super quick, easy and affordable DIY is for you!

You can set up this plug-in pendant lamp anywhere you want as long as you have a power outlet within reach. All you need is a cord set, pair it with a retro-style light bulb, and you’ll get a soft, warm lighting solution. And unlike floor lamps, it doesn’t have a base at the bottom so it doesn’t take much space… perfect to install it behind your sofa, accent chair or dining set.

What you need

– Electrical cord with bulb socket
I used this one when it was available in black but this Ikea HEMMA cord set is a really good alternative. Here is an Amazon option as well.

– Two ceiling hooks
The ceiling hooks are included in the Ikea HEMMA cord set. Otherwise, they can be found in most hardware stores – mine are about 1.5 inches long open eye screws.

– Two Command Clear Cord Clips
These are the ones I purchased on Amazon.

– Light bulb
I used the Ikea LUNNOM drop-shaped clear light bulb (204.534.77) but it doesn’t seem to be available in the U.S. and Canada at the moment. Here is another Ikea alternative as well as an Amazon option.

– Lamp shade
I used this Ikea LUFTMASSA lamp shade. This is another nice option from Ikea. And here is a hand-woven bamboo option on Etsy (it would look lovely with a white electrical cord).

How to set it up

1. Screw in the first hook close to the corner of the walls.
With the ceiling material that we have, we were able to hand screw it by applying some pressure and turning it at the same time. If this doesn’t work, you might need to drill a small hole to screw it in.

2. Screw in the second hook diagonally, about 2 feet apart from the first one.

3. Insert the light bulb into the socket.

4. Slide in the electrical cable through the lamp shade.

5. Hang the electrical cable using the hooks you installed.

6. Stick the two Command Clear Cord Clips to the wall (close to the corner) and slide in the electrical cable for a cleaner look.

Notes

Make sure the electrical cord is long enough for your installation.
This DIY is meant for a very light pendant lamp. If you would like to use a heavier lamp shade, then you would need another type of solution.

Hope this helps brighten up your space!
